The K2 Basecamp and Gondogoro La Trek is an expedition that weaves through the heart of Pakistan’s majestic Karakoram mountain range, an adventure of legendary proportions. This audacious journey, established in 1986, offers a glimpse into some of the world’s most awe-inspiring landscapes while presenting an opportunity to stand before the grandeur of K2, Earth’s second-highest peak.
From traversing glaciers to standing in awe at the foot of the mighty K2, this 63 km-long trek epitomizes human determination and the breathtaking allure of nature’s creations. This extraordinary odyssey promises an intimate connection with the world’s most splendid mountain scenery, a memory to be etched into the fabric of your life.
The legendary trek, a demanding journey spanning approximately 18 to 21 days, is contingent upon weather conditions and the chosen itinerary. The expedition commences in Islamabad, where trekkers receive a briefing from the Ministry of Tourism. Following this, the journey continues with a flight to Skardu or a picturesque road expedition, dictated by the prevailing weather.
Embarking from Askole, the final inhabited settlement on the route, the trail meanders through captivating landscapes and ever-evolving terrains. Trekkers traverse campsites such as Paiju, Urdukas, and Goro before reaching the heart of the Karakorams, Concordia.
The return journey to Skardu after the K2 basecamp adventure offers two distinct options. The first, retracing your steps via the Baltoro Glacier after trekking to Concordia and a final day-hike to the K2 base camp, is known as the “Baltoro Glacier Trek.” Alternatively, a more extensive route unfolds, leading from Concordia through the formidable 5650m Gondogoro La to Hushe Valley, ultimately concluding in Skardu. This circular trek earns the monikers “Baltoro Gondogoro La Trek” and “Baltoro K2 Basecamp Gondogoro La Trek.”
After absorbing the marvel of the K2 Basecamp, trekkers brace themselves for the challenge of Gondogoro La Pass, a formidable obstacle standing at 5650 meters. Upon traversing this high-altitude gateway, Hushe Valley beckons. The journey culminates with a return to Skardu, and from there, a triumphant return to Islamabad.
While the “Baltoro Glacier & K2 Basecamp Trek” bestows magnificent scenes of snow-crowned summits and glacier tributaries, the Gondogoro La extension adds a heightened level of challenge and fascination. Trekking from Concordia along the Vigne Glacier, reaching all the way to Ali Camp, unveils awe-inspiring views of the Chogolisa Group, Baltoro Kangri, Conway’s Saddle, and Sia Kangri. Gazing from the zenith of Gondogoro La, the panorama reveals all four over 8,000m peaks, in addition to a surrounding tapestry of mountainous splendor. Descending onto the glacier and meandering through picturesque pastures leading to the enchanting Hushe Valley, the journey concludes with an unforgettable drive along the terraced valleys of the Ghanche district.
Extending over 63 kilometers, the Baltoro Glacier stands as one of the world’s longest glaciers outside the Polar Regions. Its path winds through the Shigar District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, a realm of towering mountains. The glacier’s proximity to K2, the highest regional peak at 8,611 meters (28,251 feet), further enhances its grandeur. Nearby, three other peaks within 20 kilometers also breach the 8,000-meter mark.
The trail leads intrepid trekkers to the revered K2 Basecamp, a sanctum sought by mountaineers across the globe. Encircled by towering summits, this basecamp inspires a profound sense of reverence and wonder.
En route to the K2 Basecamp, the path unfolds through Concordia, a magical confluence where the Baltoro Glacier converges with the Godwin-Austen Glacier. Here, a series of awe-inspiring peaks stand in breathtaking concentration.
The adventure commences with a dramatic crossing of the imposing Gondogoro La Pass, soaring to an altitude of 5650 meters. This high-altitude gateway reveals panoramic vistas of iconic peaks like K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum, and Chogolisa.

Islamabad – Skardu
Upon your arrival in Islamabad, our friendly company representative will extend a warm welcome. After this pleasant meet and greet, we’ll transport you to your hotel. Once settled in, take the opportunity to explore the charming cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Later, relish a delectable dinner at a local restaurant, followed by a relaxing overnight stay at your hotel.
Today, we embark on a journey to Skardu via a convenient flight. Upon landing, we’ll transfer you to your comfortable hotel. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the sights of Skardu during a captivating sightseeing excursion. In case of flight cancellation due to weather conditions, we have an equally enchanting alternative plan. We’ll take a scenic drive along the Karakoram Highway to Chilas, making a delightful lunch stop at Besham. This scenic drive from Islamabad to Chilas usually spans about 11-12 hours. The night will be spent in cozy hotel accommodations.
Indulge in a scrumptious breakfast to start the day. Then, we set off on a captivating city tour of Skardu or embark on an exploration of the serene Sadpara Lake. Savor a delectable lunch at a local restaurant, and in the afternoon, return to the comforts of your hotel. Unwind and recharge amidst the tranquil surroundings. Alternatively, post breakfast, we’ll journey to Skardu, making a lunch stop at Stak Nala. This leg of the journey from Chilas to Skardu typically takes around 8-9 hours. Upon arrival, we’ll ensure your smooth transfer to your chosen hotel.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast at our hotel, we commence an exciting 4WD jeep drive to Jula. The journey spans approximately 7-8 hours from Skardu. Along the way, we’ll pause for a brief visit to Shigar Valley, renowned for its exquisite apricots and stunning aquamarine deposits. A delectable lunch will be served en route, and as night falls, we’ll find ourselves nestled in the embrace of a campsite.
Following a satisfying breakfast, our trek toward the enchanting Paiju begins. This magnificent natural wonder is surrounded by the moraines of Baltoro. The trek involves some invigorating rock climbing and offers awe-inspiring vistas of the Cathedrals of Baltoro. As the day comes to a close, we gather for a delightful dinner and settle into cozy tents for the night.
Start the day with a hearty breakfast amidst the picturesque campsite before embarking on a trek to Urdukas. The trail alternates between the Glacier and the lower slopes of Urdukas peaks, offering splendid views of Paiju Peak, Choricho Peak, Great Trango Tower, and Uli Biaho. The afternoon is yours to explore the breathtaking campsite at Urdukas. Savor all meals and spend the night in cozy tents.
Today marks a well-deserved rest day at Urdukas (4,140m) to acclimate and prepare for the exciting journey ahead. Utilize this time to relax and rejuvenate amidst the stunning surroundings. Savor delicious meals and enjoy a comfortable overnight stay in the camp.
Prepare for the longest and most demanding stage of the trek as we venture into the challenging terrain of the Baltoro Glacier. Marvel at the awe-inspiring vistas of Gasherbrum IV(7890m)The Massive Masharburm (7821m)Biarchedi (6760m)and the elegant Muztagh Towers 87275m). This trek spans 6-7 hours, and the night is spent camping atop the glacier. Savor a delightful dinner and rest well in cozy tents.
This stage is shorter and less strenuous, leading you to the renowned circle of the Karakoram. The path guides you to the Godwin Austen glacier, offering breathtaking views of K-2 8611m The Broad Peak 8048m, Chogolisia 7628m, Golden Throne 7312m, and the elegant Mitre Peak. The trek typically takes around 3-4 hours. Enjoy a satisfying dinner and a peaceful night’s sleep in tents.
This day presents the final stage to the K-2 Base Camp. Marvel at the grandeur of the surroundings before retracing your steps to Concordia. The trek spans around 3-4 hours each way. Savor a delicious dinner and unwind in comfortable tents.
Following a nutritious breakfast, we set our sights on Ali Camp, located approximately 9.5 km from Concordia. The journey typically spans about 4 hours. Upon arrival, set up camp and enjoy a fresh, warm lunch. The afternoon is dedicated to preparing for the upcoming Gondogoro Pass trek.
Rise early, around 2.00 am, to begin the ascent to Gondogoro Pass. Witness a breathtaking sunrise and take in the majestic views of K-2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV, Gasherbrum II, and Gasherbrum I. Descend to Hispung, a trek that takes 7-8 hours. Rest and recharge in camp, and enjoy delicious meals.
Today’s trek to Dalzampa is relatively gentle as we navigate the Gondogoro Glacier. The journey spans around 3-4 hours. Take time to explore the campsite surroundings, and as the evening sets in, relish a hearty dinner and find solace in cozy tents.
Following a nourishing breakfast, we embark on a trek to Saicho, a journey spanning approximately 4-5 hours. Saicho boasts a captivating campsite along the banks of the Hushe River. Take moments to relax and unwind, savoring both lunch and dinner amidst the serene surroundings.
After a satisfying breakfast at the camp, indulge in an easy walk along the picturesque Hushe River until you reach Hushe Village. The trek spans 4-5 hours, and the afternoon presents an opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant Balti culture. All meals are provided in the camp.
Following a hearty breakfast, we journey to Skardu via the scenic Khaplu Valley, passing through quaint small villages along the way. This scenic drive usually spans around 5-6 hours. Enjoy all meals and settle in for a comfortable overnight stay at your hotel.
After breakfast, we transfer you to the airport for a flight back to Islamabad. Please note that flights to Skardu and Gilgit are subject to weather conditions. In the event of clear skies, we’ll opt for a flight to Islamabad. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel. If weather conditions prevent flights, we embark on an equally fascinating 6-7 hour road journey to Chilas. Relish delectable meals and enjoy a restful night at your hotel.
Today, we embark on a scenic drive back to Islamabad via the picturesque Karakoram Highway. The journey spans approximately 11-12 hours and includes a refreshing lunch stop at Besham. Upon arriving in Islamabad, check-in to your hotel and indulge in a well-deserved rest. The day is yours for exploration or a visit to the vibrant bazaars of Islamabad. Enjoy all meals and settle in for an overnight stay at your hotel.
On the final day of this remarkable adventure, we’ll transfer you to the airport for your flight back home. As you bid farewell to Skardu and Pakistan, carry with you cherished memories from this unforgettable journey with Hunza Adventure Leaders.
